Wait... What do us MUD owners have to do? Last I was told, my MUD was still in the process of being reviewed and "it shouldn't be too long now". But now there's something we have to do? I don't remember that being mentioned...

Hi,
My name is Bberke. I'm a pirate, a new breed of player on Medievia.com. Us pirates we spend our days on the ocean waiting for ships to pass by; when they do we have a good ole time, setting their ship on fire and perhaps stealing it and the magic they've collected.
I've encountered a problem though, most the people in these here parts are peaceful. I'm not so peaceful, I like to kill, but I'm running low on those who would pirate with me and now the odds are stacked in the favor of the pirate police (the strong arm of order)
To join my in the struggle to have chaos prevail and pirates rule the sea, login at Medievia.com and contact bberke, or send me an email force more info.

Please keep to the subject of the thread. I'm just trying to get some partners to play with. If you have your own agendas put them on your own thread. I've played hundreds of muds have yet to play one like Medieva and I've been playing for about fifteen years. I don't care that 12 years ago Med used the same code DIKU ripped off AMBER. All these ideas were also ripped off D&D, yet I don't see anyone yapping about that.
Med is a great mud and I hope some people come and play pirate with me over here, thanks

That's because there's a big difference between inspiration, and ripping the credits out of someone else's work and trying to pass it off as your own.
Obviously you don't care, but other people do, and as these are public forums people are going to voice their opinions - particularly about something as ironic as playing a pirate on a mud which is infamous for being pirated software. If you can't accept that other posters will respond, I recommend posting elsewhere.

I don't understand why you hate diku so much.

Which is what DIKU is, a copy of AMBER styled around D&D.

Considering that all programming has been taken from each other or recoded at some point. How can anyone say what coding is true anymore? Most programs have the same base code and logic. All coding derives from somewhere. Take for example Scala was its own coding language, now turned into a program that uses the original code and turned it into an object only program. It has taken other coding to improve upon its base.
Other muds have done the same, taken other code and improved upon itself. Seriously though, the debate was years and years ago. Let it go.
Why can't people just enjoy a game that is nothing but lines of text and code? All muds are nothing but text and code. A game is ment for fun. If people want to post a game they like, let them go for it. Without the hate and the bashing.

Yes actually, I always do buy dvd's and music, and everything else. They arent entitled to my money, though if I chose to use their product I should, and do, pay for it.
<blockquote>Which is what DIKU is, a copy of AMBER styled around D&D.</blockquote>
wrong.

Yes, though this has nothing to do with license violation and outright code theft.
<blockquote>Other muds have done the same, taken other code and improved upon itself. Seriously though, the debate was years and years ago. Let it go.</blockquote>
Other muds have done the above, sure. Though taking a codebase with licensing, and ripping that out and calling it yours is vastly different.
<blockquote>Why can't people just enjoy a game that is nothing but lines of text and code? All muds are nothing but text and code. A game is ment for fun. If people want to post a game they like, let them go for it. Without the hate and the bashing.</blockquote>
If you make a game, putting countless hours into it, pouring time, effort, and passion, then I come along, disregard the intent of it. Completely ignore, and rip out the credits and license, then call it mine and parade around saying its completely original, and might 'borrow' some things from you. Would you not be ticked about that? You wouldn't care that someone totaly ripped you off and doesn't respect you or your work whatsoever?
Yah that makes perfect sense.. Well just let all the posing jerk's rip off all our work and not one of us care. What a great way to foster a caring and active community..

A book is just ink and words.. Why cant I just steal a book you wrote, rip out your name and put mine, change some character names and say its original.
People should just enjoy it without me getting flak for ripping something off. Sheesh

Hello,
I am a player of Medievia. I have spent over ten thousand hours playing Medievia and enjoy it very much. A new feature is available in Medievia that has opened up the oceans to those seeking adventure.
Pirates are few in number, those who oppose us are many. This is an open call to those who enjoy to role play player killing. Those who wish to master the seas and make all the ocean their domain, I call upon you to join me now.
Please visit Medievia.com port 4000 or contact me via email to find what adventure awauts,
A note on to those who would bash Medievia. I am just a man playing a game trying to have fun. I have not stolen anything from anyone, I am just playing a game. If you oppose Medievia take it up with their administrators, one of which, I am not. If you feel the need to clog up my thread with your bickering about DIKU licenses go ahead. I really pity those who have nothing better to do than ruin a RPGers fun.

It is interesting that so many people have posted to this thread that it has remained at the top of the Mudconnector homepage throughout the day. I would like to thank the flamers and hatemongerers for their attention.
Those who are just looking for a good mud to play, keep in mind that if Medievia was not a fun mud, people would not play, but we have many many players, many of whom are members of our armed forces and the tech community.
It is really only a few people who have nothing better to do than gripe about code theft they claim happened, but you will notice none can claim it happened to them and none of you will find a message board with angry posts from the original DIKU coders. Those who continue to gripe are just lonely coders leading muds with small player bases bitter that Medievia has a more loyal playerbase than their own.

I was in the Navy, crat, I believe, was in the Army. I also monitored/worked the CVS pharmacy networks, and now I do technical engineering for APC. Whats your point? You could run a popular mud and have the president play, and also convicts.. want to cry some more?
Im not a lonely coder at all.

Medievia is a great place to play, come check us out, Medievia.com port 4000.
As too the "truth about Medievia link"
That's not the truth about anything, that's only the rantings of one dissatisfied Medievia player, who spent many many hours playing Medievia until he was purged for being an ass.
He was so pissed off about not being able to play med anymore he has dedicated an entire page (several years old now) to slandering Medievia.
Medievia has players because it is fun. Medievia even has player elections and player officers, players set the ranking system and run all ingame organizations. There is rarely a time we do not have over one hundred players online and no multiplaying is allowed. We have players from around the world who enjoy many different styles of roleplay and general gameplay.
I love this game so much, I'll defend it too my last breath. Medievia is a game, you won't find it anywhere else, it's funny people say it was pirated from elsewhere, if that's really true then go play the original copy of Medievia. But you will not find any other Medievia, there is only one, there are not even any imitations, there are no muds that even approach it.

Sure you can. There are plenty of other sites where you can list a commercial Mud. The MudQuest List just happens to cater for the Quality Muds that are totally free, since we think they need some help getting their games displayed.
And we wouldn't even have to do it, if we could just get the big Mud-lists, like TMC and TMS, to offer a separate search option for the free Muds, which is what we really would have preferred.
But we all know what happened when we tried it. And you are right. It's depressing.

Doesn't/didn't DIKU include a Smurf Village? Did they have permission to use it?
Doesn't DIKU's default install contain areas whose authors are not credited? In fact, isn't DIKU credited to five people, all of whom are passing off work that wasn't theirs as their own insofar as they did not create the totality of what's included in the DIKU license?

Really? Well, my apologies if I'm mistaken. Kavir had previously indicated (at least I believe so) that the authors of some of the DIKU areas had not been credited but that he was assuming the DIKU authors had permission.

Nice try at discrediting me, but utterly wrong. I never played Medievia, I am instead a mud developer who got sick and tired of seeing the same flame wars appearing on usenet every few months, and even more sick of people violating my mud licence and then pointing to Medievia and saying "If they can do it, why shouldn't I?".
So I gathered all of the available evidence and information into one place so that the next time the subject came up, instead of everyone having to go over the same points again and again, someone could just post a link.
And overall it worked pretty well. It's rare to see someone claiming that Medievia is written from scratch any more - instead, the sock puppets usually have to fall back on lines like "You're just jealous" (!) or "Other muds do the same!" or "It's just text, who cares?".
Diku was <i>inspired</i> by Aber - it copies only ideas. Diku was also <i>inspired</i> by D&D - it copies only ideas. But Medievia is <i>derived</i> from Diku - it is built upon the Diku source code. Source code is protected by copyright, ideas are not.
